Stinger Missile Electrical Test System

Test system comprised of several hundred separate electrical tests performed on the Warhead, Body, Fuse, and Flight components of a missile.

Electrical Test System

A long-standing U.S. defense contractor responsible for ensuring the reliability and safety of critical weapon systems partnered with PSI to design and maintain a graphical user interface (GUI)-based electrical test system for the Stinger Missile. The system plays a crucial role in operational readiness by automatically verifying the electrical integrity of key missile components before deployment. Given the high-stakes nature of military applications, the test platform required exceptional reliability, traceability, and ease of use. PSI was engaged to design and develop a robust and user-friendly test system capable of managing complex switching and measurement tasks across multiple electrical test points.

PSI developed the original GUI application for an industrial PC environment using Windows NT, integrating seamlessly with an HP switch device and HP multimeter. Using HT-Basic and leveraging HP’s control libraries, the software was designed to automate the switching and measurement processes across electrical test nodes on the missile. The system provided a clear graphical interface for test results, which could be printed and archived, allowing for both real-time verification and long-term recordkeeping essential for defense audits and system lifecycle management.

For over 20 years, PSI has continued to support and evolve the test system. This includes migrating the platform to newer operating systems to maintain security and compatibility, updating documentation, and providing ongoing engineering support. PSI’s long-term involvement ensures the Stinger Missile electrical test system remains a dependable, compliant, and maintainable asset within the defense ecosystem.

By combining deep domain expertise in test automation and embedded systems with a commitment to long-term support, PSI delivered a solution that upholds both safety and performance standards critical to defense readiness. Their continued partnership helps the client maintain confidence in one of the U.S. military’s key guided missile systems.
